The Bordeaux region is part of Aquitaine, a former kingdom located in southwestern France. Here, the Garonne and Dordogne rivers merge to form the Gironde estuary south of the city of Bordeaux. Cruises typically begin and end in this city, where you'll find grand architecture, superb museums and cafes serving mouthwatering delicacies.

While cruising, you'll visit prestigious chateaux, charming towns and notable wineries. Stops along the Garonne River usually include Cadillac's ancient harbor and 16th-century chateau, as well as the nearby vineyards of Sauternes where you can sample dessert wines and learn how they are made. Highlights on the Dordogne include Saint-Emilion, the oldest wine-making area of the Bordeaux region, and the citadel of Blaye, an imposing fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Near the Gironde estuary lies the town of Pauillac, gateway to the Medoc wine route and its scenic landscapes. If you're lucky, you may see le mascaret, a natural wave phenomena that happens throughout the year, but particularly from June through November, in the Gironde estuary.
