Avalon will debut new Douro River cruises in Portugal at the end of this month. Visit hillside vineyards, medieval castles and delightful villages on the brand-new Avalon Alegria Suite Ship. Like Avalon's other Suite Ships in Europe, most of the accommodations are 200-square-foot Panorama Suites with wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open, essentially turning your room into one huge veranda.

Next year, the line will introduce new river cruises in Bordeaux. Cruise the captivating Garonne and Dordogne rivers and discover postcard-perfect towns, historic chateaux and charming wineries on itineraries highlighting the rich traditions of southwest France. Some sailings also include time on the Seine, Saone, Rhone and Rhine rivers.

Avalon's Europe cruise rates include a river-view stateroom, onboard meals, Wi-Fi access, guided sightseeing, sparkling wine at breakfast plus soft drinks, regional beer and wine at lunch and dinner. Complimentary beer, wine and spirits -- along with a featured cocktail of the day -- will be served during an onboard happy hour each night of the cruise.

The company's exclusive Avalon Choice program lets travelers pick from a variety of included excursions on every itinerary -- there are Classic, Active and Discovery options.

On "Classic" excursions, learn about each destination's history and traditions with local experts on walking tours and visits to museums, cathedrals, castles or archaeological sites.

"Active" excursions could involve pedaling along the cycling paths of Budapest or kayaking in Rouen. Adventure Hosts on Europe departures can provide maps, bicycles and Nordic walking sticks to those who wish to explore on their own.

On "Discovery" excursions, you might listen to a private musical performance, take a painting lesson or try a local recipe in a cooking class. Enjoy interactive experiences in a variety of venues, from renowned music halls and galleries to farmhouse kitchens.

Avalon's Active & Discovery itineraries provide a greater number of enriching and immersive shore outings. These can include energetic activities, like biking or kayaking, as well as interactive discoveries such as composing your own waltz or participating in a cocktail workshop.

The Storyteller Series is a collection of cruises featuring celebrity hosts. Guest speakers this year include Diana Gabaldon, author of the popular Outlander series; Graham McTavish, Scottish actor and author known for his on-screen roles in hits like The Hobbit and The Witcher; rock band Sister Hazel and Jen Hatmaker, podcaster and best-selling author of books such as For the Love and a cookbook, Feed These People.

Avalon has also rolled out new sustainability initiatives on its ships, with a special focus on waste reduction and recycling programs. Shore activities are carefully planned to support local businesses and communities while providing guests with unique, memorable experiences.
