Dear Vacations To Go Customer,

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, river cruises around the world temporarily stopped operating. Some ships are now planning to resume sailing on U.S. rivers this month, and we will let you know as soon as they are operating again.

In Europe, a limited number of river cruises are already operating but for Europeans only. The European Union began accepting visitors from select non-EU countries last month, which is a step toward a larger restart of river cruising. The list of approved countries, which is said to be reviewed every two weeks, includes Canada but does not yet include the United States.

This week, I'll tell you about some of the world's best rivers for cruising.

Vacations To Go offers the widest variety of itineraries along every major river in the world, plus every discount, deal and special promotion available. Below are brief summaries of the top rivers, in no particular order, along with some terrific offers for 2021.

Danube River -- The Danube flows from Germany's Black Forest to the Black Sea, leading to Old World cities like Vienna and Budapest. Visit the beautiful Benedictine abbey above the Austrian town of Melk, and walk past medieval architecture in Regensburg, Germany.

  • Save up to 10% off 2021 Uniworld cruises, plus receive up to an additional $1,500 per couple discount.
Rhine River -- View vineyards and castles from the deck of your ship. In Germany, rows of grapevines climb the banks near Rudesheim at the heart of the Rhine wine country, while Cologne is famous for its spectacular Gothic cathedral. Seine River -- Highlights of the Seine include Monet's home and gardens at Giverny; Chateau Gaillard, Richard the Lionheart's stronghold in Les Andelys; and D-Day landing sites on the beaches of Normandy. Saone River and Rhone River -- Itineraries in southern France usually combine these two rivers. On the Saone, you'll learn about the Burgundy wine industry in towns like Beaune. The Rhone runs through the Provence region; among stops are Arles, one of Van Gogh's favorite places. Bordeaux Rivers -- Ships navigate the Garonne and Dordogne rivers and the Gironde estuary in southwestern France, visiting famed wine-producing towns like Saint-Emilion, Pauillac and Sauternes. Douro River -- These sailings explore Portugal's wine region. Itineraries can stop at Regua, where port wine is produced; the Baroque-style Mateus Palace and its gardens in Vila Real; and Porto, located at the mouth of the Douro.
  • Save $200 per couple on 2021 sailings with Riviera River Cruises. Book a cabin on the middle or upper decks and save up to $1,500 per couple. Plus, receive a free $400 per couple shipboard credit.
Mississippi River -- Explore one of America's true historic treasures, a 2,320-mile waterway that flows through 10 states. Learn about the cities that flourished on the river and its tributaries, like St. Louis and New Orleans, and visit Civil War battlefields and restored mansions. Columbia River -- These Pacific Northwest voyages sail a portion of the Snake River as well; both rivers offer an abundance of history and natural beauty. Visit the Bonneville Dam, the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and locales associated with explorers Lewis and Clark. Mekong River -- Bustling cities, rural villages and floating markets are featured on Mekong cruises in Cambodia and Vietnam. See the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and sites linked to the Vietnam War, like the underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong. Angkor Archaeological Park, dating to the 12th century, is a top attraction. Amazon River -- Navigate this South American treasure aboard a ship that travels the Lower Amazon in Brazil or the Upper Amazon tributaries in Peru. Look for orchids, giant lilies, monkeys and sloths. Some itineraries venture beyond the river to explore Lima, Machu Picchu, Iguassu Falls or the Galapagos Islands.
  • Save up to 10% off 2021 Uniworld cruises, plus receive up to an additional $2,500 per couple discount.
Nile River -- These cruises provide a terrific way to delve into the vast history of Egypt. Ancient sights are prominently featured, like the Pyramids of Giza, the colossal statues of Ramses II at the Abu Simbel temple and the Valley of the Kings, where the pharaohs rest. Tours of the Aswan High Dam and a cruise in a traditional sailboat also are part of Nile River itineraries.
  • Save $1,000 per couple off 2021 Viking departures, plus save an additional $1,000 per couple off round-trip airfare from select gateways.
