DAY 1 | Welcome to Shanghai
On arrival, you’ll be escorted to the 5-star Fairmont Peace Hotel on the city’s elegant waterfront Bund.
DAY 2 | Shanghai sightseeing
From the esteemed exhibits of the Shanghai Museum and the handsome turn-of-the-century landmarks that grace the Bund to Yu Yuan Garden, completed in the 16th century, today’s sightseeing reveals the city’s rich history. This evening, we enjoy dinner with wine at our luxury hotel. (b+l+d)
DAY 3 | The all-balcony Yangzi Explorer
Fly to Yichang where we’ll spend time with a village family and explore the local farmers market. Then board our ship and settle in to your balcony stateroom. (b+l+d)
DAY 4 | Three Gorges Dam
Tour the immense Three Gorges Dam. Then enjoy Afternoon Tea as your ship navigates through the lovely Xiling Gorge. (b+l+d)
DAY 5 | Yangtze’s Gorges
Traditional sampans take you up one of the Yangtze’s most scenic tributaries. Return to ship and cruise through the dramatic Wu and Qutang Gorges. (b+l+d)
DAY 6 | Ashore in Fengdu
Learn how life in a river town has changed since the completion of the Three Gorges Dam as you explore Fengdu’s New City, built for residents forced to relocate by the river’s rising waters. (b+l+d)
DAY 7 | Fly to Tibet
Disembark in Chongqing and fly to Lhasa. Meet with a Tibetan family for insight into local life. Check in to the Shangri-La Hotel. (b+d)
DAY 8 | Exploring Lhasa
Delve into Tibet’s spiritual heritage as you visit the summer palace of Norbulingka and Jokhang Monastery, a 4-story timber structure topped with gold. Then explore Barkhor Street with its lively markets. At a local hospital, a Tibetan doctor offers insight into his use of traditional and Western medicine. Then spend time with a master Tangka painter in his studio for an deeper look into Tibetan life and culture. (b+l+d)
DAY 9 | Experience Kora and tour Potala Palace
Join Tibetans this morning as they perform Kora, an ancient rite of walking and prayer. Then tour the magnificent Potala Palace, the Anichanggu Nunnery and Sera Monastery. This evening, we’ll savor traditional Tibetan cuisine. (b+l+d)
DAY 10 | Fly to Chengdu
Your evening at the famed Sichuan opera begins with an exclusive backstage visit to watch as the skilled actors apply their intricate “face changing” make up. Enjoy a restful overnight at the luxurious Shangri-la Hotel. (b+d)
DAY 11 | Encounter a Panda and fly to Xian
Going behind the scenes this morning with caretakers at the Dujiangyan Panda Valley is a rare treat available to few visitors. After this exclusive visit, fly to Xian and transfer to the deluxe Hilton Hotel, ideally situated within the ancient city walls. (b+l)
DAY 12 | Terra Cotta Army
Stand in awe before the thousands of terra cotta warriors that were buried long ago to guard the tomb of China’s first emperor. Learn the art of traditional noodle-making at lunch and visit the city’s ancient walls. (b+l)
DAY 13 | Fly to Beijing
Fly to Beijing and transfer to the 5-star Fairmont Beijing in the heart of the capital. This afternoon’s expertly guided visit to the resplendent Summer Palace offers a fascinating glimpse into Imperial life long ago. (b+d)
DAY 14 | Beijing’s Imperial highlights
Marvel at the grandeur of Tiananmen Square and step into the days of the Ming Dynasty as you tour the Forbidden City, once the exclusive enclave of China’s mighty emperors. Then explore by rickshaw through the narrow lanes of a Beijing hutong. Sitting down to lunch with a resident family offers insight into daily life in one of the city’s last remaining enclaves of traditional centuries-old courtyard homes. (b+l)
DAY 15 | Excursion to the Great Wall
Experience the thrill of walking atop the Great Wall at Juyong Pass, one of the most historic and scenic sections of the Wall and the site of many ancient battles. Then stroll along the statue-lined Sacred Way at the Ming Tombs. Gather tonight at Hua’s Restaurant for a Peking Duck banquet. (b+l+d)
DAY 16 | Depart Beijing
