River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 - Depart USA
Depart USA and cross the international dateline.
Day 2 - Arrive Beijing
After arrival formalities, you will be met by our representative for private transfer to your deluxe hotel. Remainder of the evening at leisure to rest and adjust to the time zone.
Day 3 - Beijing
This morning, visit Tiananmen Square, the largest public square in the world with its historic Great Hall of the People. Across the broad avenue, you’ll enter the spectacular Forbidden City which was the Imperial Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After lunch at a typical Beijing eatery, as seen on The Food Channel, visit the Summer Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy a boat ride on the man-made lake. Return to your hotel in the afternoon for a rest. Dinner at leisure at your hotel. (The boat ride will not operate at all between November 01 - April 01). (B,L,D)
Day 4 - Beijing
Get an early start to visit China’s most famous landmark, the 3000-mile-long Great Wall of China, the only man-made object visible from the moon. Ride the cable car to the top of one of the ramparts from where you can stroll along the wall and see for miles in every direction. After lunch at a local farmer’s market at the foot of the wall, return to the city and the ornate Temple of Heaven with its uncanny acoustics. It is said a whisper can be heard by the gods (and everyone else in the group). Top off this evening with a Peking Duck Dinner at one of Beijing’s notable specialty restaurants. (B,L,D)
Day 5 - Beijing/Xian
Xi’an, the ancient Silk Road capital of China, is but a short flight away. This afternoon, visit the ancient City Wall – ride a bike on it, if you wish – for a unique perspective overlooking Beiyuanmen Muslim Street, including the Great Mosque. The local market offers a great selection of Chinese Muslim craftsmanship and a variety of local cuisines. This evening, enjoy the unique Xian frontier dinner at a popular local restaurant. (B,D)
Day 6 - Xian
See the extraordinary Terracotta Warriors and the Bronze Chariot buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang for more than 2,000 years. Lunch at the Museum’s Restaurant will feature a noodle-making demonstration. Return to the city this afternoon and visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the site where Buddhism was introduced to China. Stroll the wide plaza where you can find souvenirs including genuine fake antiques of the terra cotta warriors. This evening, enjoy unique vegetarian fusion dinner followed by a Tang Dynasty cultural show of music and dance. (B,L,D)
Day 7 - Xian/Guilin
Morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Guilin where you’ll visit the dramatic rock formations at Reed Flute Caves and Elephant Trunk Hill, the symbol of the city of Guilin. Enjoy dinner at leisure at your hotel. (B,D)
Day 8 - Guilin
This morning, board your scenic cruise along the Li River with its other-worldly rock formations along both riverbanks. Lunch onboard. Disembark in Yangshuo where you can walk along picturesque West Street, explore rural life In Longcheng Village and even visit a local farmer’s house nearby. Late this afternoon, transfer by coach back to Guilin. (B,L)
Day 9 - Guilin/Chongqing/Yangtze River Cruise
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Chongqing, a picturesque city on the Yangtze River that was base for the famed Flying Tigers during WWII whose heroic history is commemorated in the Stilwell Museum. Also, say ‘ni hao’ to the giant pandas in the Chongqing Zoo before board your ship for an unforgettable cruise on the most exciting stretch of the Yangtze River. (B,D)
Day 10 - Yangtze Cruise: Jade Emperor Scenic Area
Depending on river conditions, this day’s shore excursion will visit the area near Fengdu, which has the largest image of the Jade Emperor in the world or Shibaozhai, with its impressive wooden pagoda. Onboard ship, enjoy informative lectures, fashion shows and cultural presentations. (B,L,D)
Day 11- Yangtze Cruise: Qutang Gorge / Small Gorges Excursion / Wu Gorge / Xiling Gorge
Enter the Three Gorges, considered by many to be China’s most extraordinary scenery. You’ll pass through Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most dramatic. The 25-mile long Wu Gorge is known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains, and cliffs so sheer that the sun barely penetrates the precipices. Transfer to another vessel for a relaxing excursion through the attractive gorges of Goddess Stream or Shennong Stream, depending on river conditions. Finally, enter Xiling Gorge, the longest and deepest of the Three Gorges. (B,L,D)
Day 12 - Yangtze Cruise: Three Gorges Dam Excursion / Yichang / Shanghai
Disembark this morning and tour the Three Gorges Dam, which spans the Yangtze River at Sandouping in Xiling Gorge. It is the world’s largest power station and provides energy to millions of people in the Yangtze basin. Then transfer to the airport for the brief flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival in Shanghai, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. Balance of evening at leisure. (B)
Day 13 - Shanghai
This morning visit People’s Park, Shanghai MOCA – a showcase for China’s extraordinary contemporary art - and Shanghai’s old town, Yu Garden. Lunch of tasty Shanghai soup dumplings before embarking on a very special tour with a widely published expert on the history and development of Shanghai. In the evening, enjoy dinner at leisure at your hotel. (B,L)
Day 14 - Shanghai
Across the river from old Shanghai is Pudong, with its futuristic skyline that’s been the backdrop of numerous films including James Bond and Mission Impossible. You’ll enjoy an unsurpassed view of the entire Shanghai megalopolis from atop Shanghai Tower, some 26 stories taller than the Empire State Building in New York. More down to earth, at the Shanghai Museum, discover China’s exquisite ancient art including bronze, ceramic, jade and calligraphy. Taikang Road is a trendy area with galleries, shops, cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat, if you wish. Then visit the M50 Art District with open-to-public workshops, galleries and sidewalks full of statues and arty graffiti. Tonight, enjoy farewell dinner at a well-known Shanghai institution on the Bund. (B,D)
Day 15 - Shanghai/Hong Kong
Fly to Hong Kong. Situated on China’s south coast and enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and the South China Sea, Hong Kong is a complex mix of Eastern and Western cultures and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. (B)
Day 16 - Hong Kong
Cross the harbor to“the island side” as natives call it, to Hong Kong Island. After a steep tram ride to the top of Victoria Peak, you will see the panoramic view over the spectacular harbor and Kowloon Peninsula beyond. At Aberdeen, you’ll board a motorized sampan for a cruise through this floating village, complete with schools, clinics, barber shops, restaurants and everything else one would find in any community – afloat! Famed Repulse Bay is a beautiful crescent-shaped stretch along the coast, popular with locals and tourists alike. And Stanley Market is where expats and locals find great bargains along the beachfront bazaar. Wonderful restaurants along the beach may strike your fancy and you have the option to return to the hotel on your own (helpful taxi stand at either end of the beach). This evening, bid farewell to China, Hong Kong and your travel companions at a farewell dinner banquet. (B,D)
