Day 2 Budapest
Budapest is one of Europe’s oldest and prettiest cities.
Freechoice: Make the most of a guided tour of this city including a piano concert, or discover the Jewish heritage on a guided tour with an expert local guide. Alternatively, you can choose to journey to nearby riverside town in Pest County, Szentendre. Szentendre is known for its museums, galleries, and artists, and you’ll have the opportunity to discover this charming town on a guided city tour. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3 Vienna
As you cruise the mighty Danube relax in one of the lounges and viewing areas, and enjoy the scenery as your Scenic Space-Ship sails towards majestic Vienna.
Breathe in the opulence and luxury of Palais Liechtenstein while enjoying a glass of fine Austrian Sekt. Then be enthralled by an enchanting private Viennese evening concert featuring the timeless music of Strauss and Mozart. Even in elegant Vienna, Palais Liechtenstein is one of the grandest of all venues, and you’ll have ample opportunity to explore it. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 4 Vienna
Today you have options galore.
Freechoice: Take a guided tour of historic Bratislava or tour Schönbrunn Palace and witness the sheer opulence of the Habsburg Empire. Alternatively, visit the Belvedere Museum, one of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings, including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss and Judith. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 5 Dürnstein > Melk
Freechoice: Be guided through Melk’s magnificent 18th century Benedictine Abbey, originally built as a palace. Explore the opulence of this grand abbey including the awe inspiring library and abbey church. Alternatively, if you’re feeling more active, embark on an enjoyable guided bike ride along the river from Dürnstein to Melk – at your own pace, of course. Or visit a local winery for a guided tour and tasting of its fine wines.
As the day ends, you’ll get to take in the fine scenery at the breathtakingly beautiful Wachau Valley. You’ll be in very fine company, and can expect a wonderful ending to a magnificent day. Of course, we don’t take all the credit for this one. It’s nature who’ll provide the view, we’re just bringing the drinks. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 6 Linz > Passau
Freechoice: Take an excursion to the medieval Czech town of Cesky Krumlov and discover its World Heritage-listed Old City, or journey to Salzburg and explore the birthplace of Mozart, and the city backdrop for ‘The Sound of Music’. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 7 Regensburg
At the confluence of three rivers, Regensburg offers a rich tapestry of experiences, from its medieval Old Town to the Bavarian Forest on its border.
Freechoice: Join your insightful local guide for an enjoyable walk around Regensburg where you’ll discover the old town, with its array of wealthy merchant houses, the Old Bridge and the Porta Praetoria – a reminder of Regensburg’s Roman heritage. Alternatively, hop on a local ferry and sail the Danube Gorge to view historic Weltenburg Abbey, set on the shore of the Danube River. Explore the abbey and sample beer from one of the oldest monastic breweries in the world. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 8 Nuremberg
Depart after breakfast. Nuremberg is the end of your cruise, but it will be the start of a lifetime of wonderful memories. Please book flights to depart after 1pm from Nuremberg and after 2pm from Munich. (Breakfast)
From Gothic Hungarian spires to imperial Viennese treasures, discover the fairytale scenery and legendary landmarks of Central Europe. Aboard the Scenic Amber, cruise the fabled Danube River from Budapest through Austria's stunning Wachau Valley to Nuremburg. Explore gilded palaces and meticulously manicured gardens in Vienna and Salzburg; bike past charming red-roofed villages laced with lush vineyards; and witness the tapestry of medieval, Renaissance, and Roman architecture woven through old-world Europe.
These departures will be accompanied by a National Geographic expert who will give talks throughout the week and join guests on off-ship excursions. Additionally, a National Geographic photographer will be on board to share techniques and help guests hone their photography skills. We’ve added extra choice excursions as well, from hikes and bike rides to in-depth learning experiences that focus on the natural world, culture, and history.
National Geographic Expert (August 1-August 8 departure): Teresa Fisher
Teresa Fisher is a National Geographic author and freelance travel writer based in Portsmouth, UK. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Exeter University, she initially worked in London for Sotheby’s auction house; then in Europe as a cross-cultural communications trainer, living in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland and Taiwan. While residing in Bavaria, she commenced a career in travel writing, focusing initially on Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy – destinations which still hold a special place in her heart. Teresa has since penned more than 30 guidebooks and children’s educational books on a wide variety of destinations from Europe to Japan, for publishers such as Lonely Planet, Frommer’s and Fodor’s, and including National Geographic Traveler Switzerland. She specializes in European cities, adventure travel to far-flung destinations and all things Alpine, dividing her time between her family-oriented website, familyskinews.com, and photojournalism. Her stories have taken her round the globe, documenting wildlife and culture in some of the world’s more remote places. Highlights include tracking jaguars by dugout canoe in Guyana, tracking orangutan in eastern Sabah, backpacking round Japan, and being part of the first team of husky mushers to cross from Finland into Russia. When she’s not travelling or skiing, Teresa spends summer months aboard her houseboat in the world’s largest natural harbour, Poole Harbour. Teresa speaks French, German and some Italian, plays the violin and piano, and is a member of The British Guild of Travel Writers and The Arts Society. She has been leading expeditions for National Geographic in Europe for more than half a dozen years.
National Geographic Photographer (August 1-August 8 departure): Krista Rossow
For more than a decade, Krista Rossow has worked as a photographer, photo editor, and educator for National Geographic. She began her career as a photo editor at National Geographic Traveler magazine, where she shaped compelling stories from world-class imagery. As a freelance photographer she has shot feature stories for Traveler in South Africa, Costa Rica, and cities around the United States like New Orleans and San Francisco. She regularly judges Instagram contests for @NatGeoTravel and photo edits for National Geographic Books. Krista travels with National Geographic Expeditions teaching photography around the world–from the Galápagos Islands, Patagonia, and Morocco to Alaska, Antarctica, and the Arctic. She enjoys traveling and photographing throughout Europe as well, and she sees the camera as a tool for understanding new cultures, meeting the locals, and exploring the natural world. Her images are represented by National Geographic Creative.
